dMAT Exam 2027 for Germany: January and March Sessions, APS Rules and Who Needs the Test

Planning a Master’s in Germany for the winter semester 2027/28? Alongside university applications and academic documents, you may need to plan for the digital Master Test, officially written as dMAT.

The key is to check whether the requirement applies to your previous degree and your APS procedure. Being a science graduate, or choosing a technical Master’s, does not by itself answer that question.

January and March 2027: what has actually been announced?

APS India has announced the next test cycles for mid-January and mid-March 2027, highlighting their relevance for winter semester 2027/28 applicants.

However, an announced test period is different from a confirmed, bookable exam date.

Do not treat an estimated January date circulating online as an official appointment. Monitor the APS India homepage for the update and follow the official registration instructions when published. 

What is dMAT?

The digital Master Test is a standardised academic aptitude test. For selected Indian Master’s applicants, it is an additional part of the APS documentation process.

Two organizations have different responsibilities:

The India-specific test combines a Core Module with the General Academic Module. It assesses reasoning and the ability to apply skills to academic problems. Preparation should therefore include understanding question types and practicing problem solving, rather than only memorizing facts.

A valid passport is required. The official India page currently lists PayPal and eligible Mastercard/Visa credit cards with 3D Secure authentication; debit cards are not accepted. Recheck these requirements before payment. 

Which graduates may need dMAT?

The introductory field groups published on the official India test page are:

• Engineering Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics, Business and Management

The requirement concerns affected applicants seeking a German Master’s from summer semester 2027 onwards, which includes winter semester 2027/28. However, APS has announced that an updated field list is coming. Students should recheck that update before making a final eligibility decision. 

The science-degree confusion: does every B.Sc. graduate need it?

No blanket rule should be applied to all B.Sc. graduates.

APS’s published field guidance, Version 1.0 dated 29 June 2026, makes distinctions such as:

“Not automatically included” does not mean a permanent exemption. APS makes the final classification using the official degree title, branch, major, specialisation and academic records.

The intended German Master’s title alone does not determine the classification of your previous qualification. With an updated list pending, ambiguous cases should be referred to APS rather than decided from “B.Sc.” or “technology” alone. 

Practical advice: Send APS your exact degree title, university, branch or specialisation and relevant transcript details when requesting clarification. Keep the written response with your application records.

Can you apply for APS before taking dMAT?

Yes. APS permits applicants to submit their APS documents before the required dMAT certificate becomes available. Verification may begin in advance. Where dMAT is required, APS can issue the final certificate only after receiving and verifying the dMAT result.

This flexibility applies only to the dMAT certificate. All other documents required by the applicable APS checklist must be included initially. APS expressly says additional or updated academic qualification documents cannot be added later alongside dMAT for the same procedure. 

Do not interpret this as permission to send an otherwise incomplete academic file.

Should you wait for APS to ask you to take the test?

If your requirement is clear, plan proactively. Waiting for a personal reminder could leave you with less time to book and prepare.

If your degree classification is unclear, seek written clarification from APS while following the published application instructions. The official test provider also directs uncertain applicants to APS for eligibility decisions. 

Who has a transitional exemption?

APS states that applicants are exempt for the relevant APS procedure if they:

• Completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026; or
• Shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026.

Applicants who already received their APS certificate do not need dMAT retrospectively for that completed procedure. A later, new APS application follows the rules applicable at that time. A low dMAT score does not automatically cause APS refusal. [4]

Keep registration confirmations and shipment evidence if relying on a transitional rule.

How should you book when registration opens?

1. Check the official announcement and confirm your applicant category.
2. Follow the registration link from the official dMAT website.
3. Enter personal details exactly as shown in your passport.
4. Upload the required photograph.
5. Select an available test centre, complete payment and retain confirmation.

Each sitting has its own registration deadline. The available centres appear during booking. Use the fee displayed on the booking page for that sitting rather than assuming an older quoted price remains unchanged. [5]

Avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements around an unconfirmed test day.

What is the exam format, and how can you prepare?

The APS version requires both the Core Module and General Academic Module. Questions use a single-choice format, and the current subject module is in English.

Official sample tasks and a participant-portal demo are available. Start with these materials to understand the software and the reasoning expected. The provider’s general overview describes an examination lasting about three and a half hours, including a break between modules. [5][6]

Use the India-specific instructions when selecting your test. The wider dMAT website also describes university-specific subject modules; these should not be confused with the General Academic Module used for APS. [6]

Will January dMAT guarantee the winter 2027/28 intake?

No. The January and March sessions are relevant opportunities, but taking the test does not reserve a university place or guarantee that every deadline can be met.

For planning, work backwards from each programme’s deadline:

• When must the university receive APS?
• Does it accept an application while APS is pending?
• When will your dMAT certificate become available?
• What time remains for APS completion and subsequent visa arrangements?

Ask each university about pending-document policies. Do not assume a general application deadline allows missing APS documentation.

Until the new result-release dates are published, leave room in your plan for uncertainty. If choosing between January and March, compare the complete timeline rather than only the exam date.
